September 11, 2010 - The Brigitte Warner Memorial Workshop
Rick Layton

Rick Layton

Singing and Saying, Moving and Playing

The workshop participants will be actively involved in a number of experiences including working with riddles, dancing (and playing) an Israeli folk dance, and playing/dancing two Renaissance dances.  The music used during the workshop will focus on the elemental style of MUSIC FOR CHILDREN, by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman.  Participants will not only learn and create music, but will also be involved in discussions of the musical basis for teaching this elemental style to children, and (perhaps more importantly) how this elemental teaching approach can be applied to other music as well.

Dr. Richard Layton (“Rick”) is the Upper School Performing Arts Chair at The Key School in Annapolis, MD.  He holds Level III Orff Schulwerk Certification, and Master and Doctorate degrees in Music Theory.  In addition to his work with students at The Key School, Rick also teaches music theory at the University of Maryland, and Orff Schulwerk levels training courses.  He has been a clinician at numerous state music conferences, and presents regularly at the national conference of the American Orff Schulwerk Association since 1988.  Rick’s international teaching includes the Orff Institute in Austria, Canada, Taiwan, and Australia.

In the End, It's all About PROCESS!

When students are engaged with hands-on learning that is developmentally appropriate and carefully guided, sophisticated musical results can be achieved starting with the simplest of materials.  Clear teaching process in combination with elemental music-making allows the learner to engage from introduction to culmination.  Workshop will focus on original source materials (Keetman & Orff), folk songs and other musical resources.

Please note:  The activities in this workshop will focus on lessons for grades 4 - 7 and include singing, moving, barred instruments, untuned percussion and recorder.  Participants should bring all available voices of recorders.

Jo Ella Hug is a teacher in a large Middle School in Missoula, Montana.  Although her current specialty is using Orff Schulwerk in grades 6, 7 & 8, she has taught all ages of learners from Kindergarten through adult.  In the summer, she teaches Orff Schulwerk Teacher Education at various Universities including the program at the University of St Thomas in St. Paul, MN.  Jo Ella has been included 4 times in the annual publication of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.  She has presented numerous workshops around the USA and Canada as well as many AOSA National Conference Sessions.  Jo Ella has been a headliner at the National Conference of Carl Orff Canada in 2000 and 2010; has presented for MENC All-Northwest and the MENC 2008 National Conference in Milwaukee.  She is the immediate Past President of AOSA.

Movin' On Up

Starting with babies and toddlers in the parent/child music class setting, we’ll move on up through preschool, kindergarten, and elementary aged children, discovering ways to use movement to strengthen musical skills, increase musicality and create avenues for creativity and growth.

Kris Olson earned a master’s degree in music education with an Orff emphasis from the University of St. Thomas.  She has taught music and movement in public, private, rural and urban settings for the past 20 years.  Kris presents workshops for Orff chapters, AOSA National Conferences and has taught summer movement classes at George Mason and St. Thomas Universities.  Kris currently teaches early childhood classes, raises her two boys and dances as much as possible.
